FAQs

Why are your articles paywalled?

We believe subscription revenue is the key to the future of local news. You can read more of our thoughts on this in our About Us page and welcome post. By focusing purely on publishing quality original stories about San Francisco, rather than search and social considerations, we think we’ll do better work that speaks for itself and earns your hard-earned bucks for a subscription.

How many articles can I read before subscribing?

Right now you can read one (1) free article before you are prompted with a Registration Wall and asked to register with an email address. This step creates your user and signs you up for our free Gazetteer SF newsletter.

You can then read one (1) more free article before being prompted with the Paywall, at which point you must become a paid subscriber to read more Gazetteer articles.

So you can read two (2) free articles without subscribing.

Please note that we also currently allow about a third of every story to be read before the Registration Wall or Paywall appears. So anyone can read the intro excerpt of any Gazetteer story that way, but not the full thing.

How often do you send emails and texts? How do I sign up?

The two main channels we distribute Gazetteer SF stories are by email newsletter and text message.

We send a weekly newsletter on Friday mornings to paid subscribers only. We send a monthly free newsletter to registered users at the end of each month.

We send all of our stories (and occasional ad hoc musings) to the free Gazetteer SF Text Line, which you can sign up for by texting the letters SF to (415) 787-6570, at our Subtext signup page, or by updating your profile if you're a free user or paid subscriber. You can also text tips or feedback to us at that number.
