Valkyries for life

After the Valkyries won the WNBA championship, tattoo artist Regina “Push” Estrada went straight to the drawing board.

“I was just so excited,” Estrada, owner of tattoo shop Gold Leaf Ink at 1755 Market St. said. She got down to work sketching some images for flash tattoos, including a team logo, variations on V’s Up, and a Valks corgi. “I’m still so excited, I can’t believe it.”

Estrada posted some of them on Instagram on Monday. She’s booked around 30–40 appointments as of Thursday. The cost for each tattoo depends on the size, but smaller designs start at $100 and go up from there, Estrada said.

Her flash events usually last just a day. But for this momentous occasion, she’s giving people a little more time.

“I knew everyone was going to be busy because of the parade, and there’s a ton of people drinking and all kinds of stuff,” she said. “So I’m like, ‘Go have fun, celebrate. You don’t have to rush and come here directly after.’”

According to Estrada, some fans have booked appointments for next week, others for next month. Estrada’s clientele, like the Valkyries fan base, spans generations. The artist has already inked someone in their 60s and someone was 20 years old, she said.

So far, the most popular tattoo is the Valkyries logo with the clouds, Estrada said. If people show up feeling torn between a couple of designs, she’s open for a mashup, like the championship trophy in the clouds with the sword going through it.

Estrada said she’s tattooed WNBA players from the Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, and New York Liberty, but hasn’t had a chance to do one for a Valkyrie. At least not yet.
